DESCRIPTION:or as long as there has been a place called Maryland\, there have been people whom we would today see as fitting within the LGBTQ+ community.   As cities grew in the 19th century\, newspapers began to offer tantalizing clues that all was not straight and narrow and that LGBTQ+ people were becoming more visible\, finding each other\, and building communities. \nJoin us as Ben Egerman presents the fascinating and fabulous history of our community going all the way back to the 1830s: from trans sailors to lesbian philanthropists\, from the West Baltimore drag balls of the Jazz era to the repression and bar raids of the 1950s and 1960s\, and ultimately to the 1970s and beyond\, when activists formed Baltimore’s earliest organizations championing LGBTQ+ rights.

DESCRIPTION:These are desperate times\, and we stand at a crossroads. \nThose in power have sought to replace compassion and empathy with scorn and contempt for several years. Immigrants\, women\, the LGBTQIA+ community\, and more have been made to feel disenfranchised\, and our very lives are up for debate. \nA group of crime fiction writers have partnered with the Transgender Law Center in support of its goal to “champion the right of all transgender people and gender-nonconforming people to make their own choices and live freely\, safely\, and authentically.” \nFrom March 26 through April 1\, 2025\, you can bid on a wonderful range of items\, including from some of the most celebrated voices in crime and crime-adjacent fiction. All proceeds will be donated to the Transgender Law Center to help further their important work. \n\nSaundra Mitchell\, one of the authors\, is part of Annapolis Pride.  She has written many books for young adults and has contributed some to the auction\, along with some swag from Annapolis Pride.\n\nThis is a wide-ranging effort created and led by a group of writers who identify as LGBTQIA+ or as straight allies.
